Acupuncture has been an essential part of medicine for thousands of years in the East. Its benefits are still being discovered in the West as scientific studies offer evidence that the practice of inserting needles along energetic pathways can ease pain and treat ailments from osteoarthritis to migraine headaches.

The technique is very safe and relatively painless. It involves placing hair-thin needles in various pressure points or acupoints throughout the body. Stimulating these points is believed to promote the body's natural healing capability and enhance its function.

In the U.S. and other Western countries people are using acupuncture both as a complement and as an alternative to traditional Western medicine. This latest video details the growing trend in the United Kingdom.

Illness occurs when the flow of energy is blocked or misguided, similar to the flow of water when dammed or diverted. Blockages can occur due to physical, emotional and mental imbalances. Acupuncture can relieve the obstruction in the flow of energy, enabling the body to heal. Acupuncture uses a holistic approach to medicine by treating the individual and the interconnections between all body systems.

From a Western perspective, acupuncture works to relieve pain by stimulating the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) to release chemicals called neurotransmitters and hormones. These chemicals dull pain, boost the immune system and regulate various body functions.

Acupuncture is the best preventative medicine in its ability to restore body function and prevent disease before it manifests and is more difficult to treat.
